Four coordinators of projects funded under the Horizon 2020 program, NONTOX, PLAST2bCLEANED, CREAToR, CIRCULAR FLOORING and REACT held a conference to explore the different approaches that are being adopted to address the challenges of plastic recycling.

A group of European projects have joined forces to promote the results, obtained up to now and under development, regarding more effective and sustainable treatments and methods on the theme of recovery and recycling of plastic materials.

Four coordinators of projects funded under the Horizon 2020 program:

  • NONTOX (deals with the removal of hazardous substances to increase recycling rates of WEEE, ELV and CDW plastics),
  • PLAST2bCLEANED (develops a recycling process for the plastic contained in waste electrical and electronic equipment),
  • CREAToR (aims to remove flame retardants from plastics),
  • CIRCULAR FLOORING (focuses on a circular recycling process of post-consumer PVC floor coverings),
  • REACT (aims to validate a new process for removing chemicals from acrylic fabrics in order to recycle them),

on July 1, 2021, they held a conference entitled “Recycling of plastics. Towards a more sustainable plastic treatment in 2030” to explore the different approaches that are being adopted to address the challenges of plastic recycling.

The conference opened with a series of lightning speeches to provide participants with insights into each project, showing innovations to reduce the “footprint” of plastic consumption and double the rate of use of circular materials over the next decade.

In this context, the Textile Cotton and Clothing Center participated by presenting the REACT project within the conference, saying that REACT focuses on acrylic fiber, a synthetic fiber based on polyacrylonitrile, which is a plastic.

During the webinar, the results obtained so far from the REACT project were presented, providing an important focus on the “impacts” that REACT will have on the theme of the recovery and recycling of textile fabrics, mainly used in awnings, by studying and experimenting processes removal of the finishings conferred.

By “impact” we mean the benefit that derives from the application of innovation in the development phase in industrial practices.

The main benefits obtainable at the end of the REACT project can be summarized as follows:

  • higher purity and quality of secondary raw materials (remove 90% of chemicals from the finishing process and obtain a final purity of the recycled fiber between 90 and 95%)
  • reduction of hazardous substances in recycled materials.

Finally, the REACT project also aims to promote the technological transfer of the same approach to other fibers and in other sectors.

The webinar closed with an in-depth interactive round table on the four European research projects and their innovations. Each panel member explained how they are addressing their respective sustainability challenges.
