[:en] The REACT project, funded by the European Horizon 2020 programme, aims to mechanically recycle acrylic fabrics from the whole life cycle from production to recovery of fabrics for awnings, umbrellas, and furniture at the end of their use. The main problem addressed by the project is the removal of substances on the fabrics. The project is part of the H2020 package on “Climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials”, which is why the project’s work programme foresees that the effluents resulting from the removal process are not disposed of as special waste but are subjected to an effluent treatment phase so that the removed substances do not end up in the environment. In fact, these substances once removed, if not properly treated, will contaminate groundwater. The ultimate aim of this line of research in the project is to arrive at water from the plant that conforms to municipal wastewater and can therefore be assimilated to urban wastewater. Wastewater treatment is unequivocally linked to the process of substance removal, so during the development of this process, wastewater was collected and analysed extensively to assess the degree of pollution released by the treatment. Common wastewater analyses – Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), conducted by Centrocot – on these wastewaters showed high pollution values, due to the presence of compounds that are difficult to decompose; these substances require high values of oxygen to be degraded or biodegraded. These high levels of pollutants, if not properly treated, would decrease dissolved oxygen values in water and contribute to water eutrophication, affecting the ecosystem of lakes, rivers, and seas. Collaboration between Centrocot and Parà, with the support of Pieco, will evaluate the development of a biological purification system adapted to the type of pollutants present. The existing wastewater treatment plant at the Parà production site will be used as a starting point for the study. The project will evaluate the potential of the activated sludge already used in this plant in purifying wastewater produced by the pollutant removal process. If the sludge currently used is not able to treat this water, it will be implemented with appropriate types of biomass to improve biodegradation efficiency. In addition, the project will assess the potential of alternative purification techniques, accompanying biodegradation through the development of a membrane and reverse osmosis ultrafiltration process developed by Softchemical, in order to increase the degree of purity of the water and further lower its pollutant load. The final objective of this research branch of the REACT project is the design of a water purification plant specifically designed to treat the effluents from the process of removing pollutants from acrylic fabric, avoiding contamination of the water systems by the removed finishing, leading to the possible re-use of the process water and thus generating recycling not only of the acrylic fabric. The pollutants once removed would create a high environmental impact, just as high as if left on fabrics destined for incineration or landfill. In the REACT project this problem was considered, and the result is the study of a method for purifying water in order to reduce the pollutant load to values below the limits, preventing this water from becoming special waste and so that it can be reused.
